How much do you know about the structure of government and how it works (or is supposed to work)? If your answer is something like “not enough,” you’re not alone. Research last year by the Annenberg Public Policy Center revealed that most Americans can name only one of the rights guaranteed by the First Amendment (free speech — there are four others); 22% thought the First Amendment addressed the right to bear arms (that’s the Second): and 17% could not name any of the branches of government.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — An Ohio Republican lawmaker is defending his controversial bill that would charge teachers and school district librarians with felonies for “pandering” so-called “obscene” material.

Bridget Rueter’s kids love reading, which has inspired her mission to stop book bans across the state. The Cincinnati mom is a part of Red, Wine & Blue — an organization made up of suburban women in Ohio who advocate for progressive causes.

“I have the right to say what is okay for my child to read,” Rueter said.

She is now worried that educators will be censored due to new legislation.

“I think my initial reaction was shock to see the words obscene and school librarian in the same sentence,” Rueter said.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The inflammatory language targeting a reproductive rights measure on Ohio’s fall ballot is the type of messaging that is common in the closing weeks of a highly contested initiative campaign — warning of “abortion on demand” or “dismemberment of fully conscious children” if voters approve it.

Only the messaging isn’t just coming from the anti-abortion groups that oppose the constitutional amendment. It’s being promoted on the official government website of the Republican-controlled Ohio Senate.

And because the source is a government website, the messaging is being prioritized in online searches for information about Issue 1, the question going before Ohio voters Nov. 7 to enshrine abortion access in the state Constitution.

The “On The Record” blog on the state Senate website is billed as an “online newsroom” presenting “the views the news excludes.” It features attacks against Ohio news outlets, op-ed style columns by Republican state senators and content generated by members of the Senate majority’s communications staff and other noted conservatives.

……..

A detailed analysis of “On The Record” by a group supporting the constitutional amendment shows “no distinguishable difference” between the blog and the Senate site, meaning they use the same resources.

Britt Bischoff, chief growth officer for Red Wine & Blue, a progressive women’s organization, said the group has been trying to outcompete misinformation around issue 1 with its own messages, but the weight given to government websites in searches makes it difficult to counter the messages spread through “On the Record.”

“While Google has been responsive in removing some results for search terms where (misinformation posts) have been flagged, it’s not 100%, and there are hundreds of search terms this page is targeting that deliberately targets questions around Issue 1 with intentional attempts to spread political ideologies in positions of authority,” Bischoff’s analysis determined.

Google did not return an email message seeking comment about its search priorities.

Fortney pushed back against the criticism. He said the op-ed style pieces are “clearly opinion,” though nowhere are they marked as such, and that “On The Record” is intended to promote the views of Senate Republicans that, in many cases, Ohio media outlets have refused to publish.

“People signed on to the language of the actual constitutional amendment,” Red, Wine and Blue founder Katie Paris said. “They deserve to see the actual language.”

A much-debated special election last month in Ohio ended with the defeat of Issue One, a measure proposed by lawmakers in Columbus to make it harder for citizens to change the state’s Constitution.

Another Issue One, involving reproductive rights, will go before voters during the general election in November.

“It is confusing, right?” Jen Perez said.

Perez is an abortion-rights advocate with an organization called Red Wine and Blue, which was founded in Ohio.

“I think this is intentional that Issue One is what we’re facing here in November,” Perez said.

The November version of Issue One is a citizen-led, petition-fueled effort to add abortion protections to Ohio’s Constitution.

“We’ve been having conversations since the spring, since March, where we were saying: Step one, sign the petition. Step two, vote no in August. Step three, vote yes in November,” Perez said.

Groups that want to put a proposal before voters this fall to enshrine abortion into the Ohio constitution took their petition signature gathering efforts for a “trial run” this weekend, knowing they have a short timeline to make the ballot. And they say it was a success.

Drive-through petition signing sites were set up in Geauga, Warren and Medina Counties by Red Wine & Blue, a group that focuses on engaging women in suburban swing districts in the political process, often for Democratic causes.

Marla Zwinggi, who was hailed as a “Vaccine Queen” during the pandemic, organized a drive-through signature event for an abortion-rights constitutional amendment proposal that supporters want on the ballot in the fall.

“I’m just a mom; I live in Geauga County, which is typically a red county, but a lot of people out here are hungry for change,” Zwinggi said. “Women sometimes aren’t always in tune with politics. We’re raising our families. We have to go to PTO meetings. We’ve got to do this. We’ve got to do that.”

On Monday came the announcement that abortion-rights activists could begin collecting signatures for a ballot initiative that, if passed, would amend the Ohio Constitution to allow abortion until fetal viability in the state.

“In Bainbridge in Geauga County, we will be circulating petitions to get people to sign so we can get this on the ballot in November to secure our rights,” activist Marla Zwinggi said.

To officially be put on the November ballot, organizers must obtain more than 413,000 signatures from people spread across at least 44 of Ohio’s 88 counties, or 10% of the number of votes cast in the most recent gubernatorial race.

I didn’t expect to see the big camera and boom mic at the “LGBTQ+ & You: Advocates, Allies, & Candidates” event hosted by Red Wine & Blue last Sunday at Cleveland’s LGBT Center. Found out one of CNN’s documentary teams was there to record Ember, and her mom, Minna, two of the speakers that day.

Ember and Minna have become the face of trans youth who want to play sports in school. Ember’s story is personal, powerful, and – by her own decision – public. She told us, “If I don’t speak up, who will?” I urge you to know her story.

Speaking up is not the easiest thing to do. Ever. Anywhere. By anyone. Ember’s family has lost their privacy and weekends at home, as they show up wherever their story is needed. The women of RWB show up, too.

Marla Zwinggi and Missy McGuinness, RWB Northeast Ohio Organizers, were the emcees for the event. I had met Zwinggi at a Geauga Pride event, but you might recognize her as one of Northeast Ohio’s Vaccine Queens. (She and Stacey Bene heroically worked to track down and schedule elusive Covid-19 vaccines for thousands of Ohioans at the height of the pandemic.)

Ohio, September 23, 2022Today Change Research released a new poll showing that Ohio Republicans are deeply unpopular, including among suburban women, and are at risk of losing their statewide races in November due in part to their unpopular views on abortion.

See the findings here. The poll found:

  • Tim Ryan is leading J.D. Vance by 5 points: 47-42.
    • Vance’s statements about women raise further doubts about him with 62% of all voters, and 73% of suburban women.
    • Even positive messaging regarding his campaign is not persuasive to voter
  • All Ohio Supreme Court races are all close and 66% of voters say they are more important this year than in previous elections.
  • Mike DeWine is struggling to retain Republican voters and is unfavorable with Democratic voters, including those who once viewed him favorably. Nan Whaley is trailing Mike DeWine by 6 points: 39-45.
    • Media polls showing a greater differential between DeWine and Whaley may be catching onto a Trump bump. But DeWine has a problem with Trump voters that media polls are missing.
    • When given an option not to vote in the governor’s race, 7% of voters chose that option. Looking at the crosstabs, these are almost exclusively Trump voters.
    • The 10% who are “unsure” are politically mixed – and disproportionately suburban moms.
  • All proposals, current laws, and ideations of abortion bans in Ohio are deeply unpopular with voters – especially suburban women.
    • This is not just Democrats: over two-thirds of independents, those who will decide this election, and even one-third of Republicans oppose these laws.
    • 83% of people knew of the story of the 10-year-old girl who had to leave the state to seek an abortion.

“For all wondering what the overturn of Roe v. Wade means for the midterms, we have your answer: The suburban woman backlash is here. Voters are seeing that today’s GOP is no longer their parent’s Republican Party. Mainstream suburban women are fired up to not only vote against extreme politicians in November, but to bring their friends and family with them.” – Katie Paris, Red Wine & Blue founder and Ohio suburban mom

“Ohio voters, and especially suburban women, are deeply concerned about the personal impact of the extremism they see, including abortion bans and their potential ramifications. That concern is at the forefront of their mind when considering who they’ll cast their vote for in November. This is not a good sign for Republicans.” – Stephen Clermont, Change Research Director of Polling

Change Research polled 1,209 voters in Ohio from September 2-7, 2022, conducted on behalf of Red Wine & Blue.

Red Wine & Blue’s Great Troublemaker Turnout is a friend-to-friend voter turnout program mobilizing suburban women volunteers to turn out hundreds of thousands of their friends and family in the 2022 midterms in Ohio, Michigan, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania.
