The Hear Us Roar in ‘24 rally in Nags Head concluded on a powerful note as nearly100 participants gathered at Dowdy Park to advocate for women’s reproductive rights on the eve of the two-year anniversary of the Dobbs decision reversing a woman’s constitutional right to an abortion. Despite a heat advisory, attendees were energized, displaying handmade signs and engaging in spirited chants.

……

“Voters must advocate to retain reproductive rights. In addition to abortion health care, we must ensure that access to contraception and IVF is not limited, because they are also being targeted,” she warned.

Janice Robinson, NC Program Director of Red Wine and Blue, and Susan Sawin, Dare County Democratic Party Chair, delivered compelling closing remarks, urging rally-goers to mobilize ahead of the elections.

“This rally is just the beginning,” emphasized Robinson. “We must channel our passion into action by mobilizing and voting for candidates who prioritize women’s rights and healthcare access.

Sawin echoed Robinson’s sentiments, stating, “Our voices matter at the ballot box. Let’s ensure our elected officials reflect our values and fight for reproductive justice.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Senator Bob Casey of Pennsylvania joined a virtual event titled “Birth Control is On the Ballot,” on Tuesday hosted by Red Wine & Blue, a community organization focused on empowering women to combat political extremism.

Katie Paris, the founder of Red Wine & Blue, opened the session by emphasizing the gravity of the Senate vote. She pointed out that only two Republican senators voted in favor of the Right to Contraception Act, a stark indicator of the current political climate surrounding reproductive rights.

“We need to get loud about this,” Paris said. “This election is about common sense versus extremism, and we need everyone to know what’s at stake.

“Arizona Republicans tried to turn back the clock to 1864 to impose a near-total abortion ban across their state. We refuse to stand by and acquiesce to their oppressive and dangerous attacks on women,” Newsom, a Democrat, said in a statement Thursday.

The new law allows licensed Arizona doctors to obtain a temporary California medical license within five days of submitting the required documentation to the medical boards.

Nonprofit organizations like Essential Access and Red, Wine, and Blue will cover the associated fees for the procedures.

California Assemblyman James Gallagher, a Republican, voted against the bill, arguing it “is less about helping women than it is about Newsom’s shadow campaign for president.”

“Creating the types of communities that we want to live in means reaching out with our hands and our hearts to our neighbors. When we come together to care for and support each other, we are unstoppable.”

Thursday marked the one-year anniversary of the passage of Senate Bill 20, legislation that banned abortions in North Carolina after 12 weeks.

Robinson said in 1975, when she was just 15 years old, she endured a “back-alley abortion” when she was growing up in rural South Carolina.

Roe v. Wade had been decided two years earlier, but her mother didn’t know the U.S. Supreme Court had decided women had a fundamental right to access a safe, legal abortion. Robinson said after the procedure she went home and lost so much blood from the complications that she passed out.

“You’re probably thinking next that I was taken to the hospital. No, I was not. My mother nursed me back to health in our home.”

Robinson said she shares that ‘nightmare’ decades after the fact because she wants people to realize the same horrors could await women and girls who do not have access to safe abortion care, if they choose or need that option.“They risk being in a similar situation or worse without this care,” Robinson said.

WOODSTOCK, Va. — A group of supporters in Warren County is prepared to support their neighbors in Shenandoah County fight against an effort to reverse school names back to their original Confederate names.

The Shenandoah County School Board is expected to vote on a request by the group Coalition for Better Schools to restore the names of two schools that were changed amid the racial reckoning in 2020.

The school board then changed Stonewall Jackson High School to Mountain View High School and Ashby Lee Elementary School to Honey Run Elementary School. The same group attempted to reverse the names in 2022 but it was stalled by school board members in a 3-3 vote.

“To remove that symbol of solidarity is a big message to the community, locally and regionally,” Kelsey Lawrence of Front Royal, a rally organizer, told WUSA9. “It starts in these areas where there’s not as many people. If we don’t pay attention, it grows and festers, and these things gain traction.”

I am a suburban mom, as is Kim Barbaro. We share similar reasons for standing up, showing up, and speaking out; the vital importance of maintaining democracy in our country, beginning at the local, grassroots level.

Barbaro is a powerhouse who acknowledges being an introvert and needing to rise to the occasion and let her voice be heard when her son required additional support from the medical and school systems. What she found when she attended school board meetings in the district were that things were disturbingly amiss, and she knew she needed to up her level of involvement, which eventually led her to joining Red Wine & Blue.

Please share the origin of TroubleNation.

TroubleNation is a program started by Red Wine & Blue, a powerful grassroots network of half a million diverse suburban women working together to defeat extremism. Red Wine & Blue offers resources to learn about the issues impacting our communities, and provides ways to take action and get involved, primarily by training our members on relational (aka “friend to friend”) organizing. Suburban women have unique relationships and networks – we live rich, complex lives. Sharing our stories and having conversations about what matters most to us can be phenomenally impactful.

Red Wine & Blue was founded in 2019 by Katie Paris, an Ohio suburban mom, after feeling a personal responsibility to mobilize other suburban moms to do their part. Initially focused on building a network of women in Ohio, we expanded nationally in 2021, and now have organizers on the ground in each of our target states: Virginia, Michigan, Ohio, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Nicole Sidman walked up a long driveway in a hilly suburban neighborhood of Charlotte, campaign flyers in hand, ready to talk about an issue that prompted her to run in the Democratic primary for the state legislature this year.

A chubby white Chihuahua named Frankie came running when she rang the bell. Rebekah Rubenstein opened her door.

“I know who you are!” Rubenstein told Sidman. Rubenstein, who has three daughters, quickly told Sidman she plans to vote for her and will bring her 8-year-old daughter to the polls to be part of a moment she described as critical.

“For my children to be able to have the right — now, in the future, any time — to make the choices about their own bodies is essential,” Rubenstein said. “So that’s 100% in the forefront of my vote.”

Ohio’s abortion vote comes just one year before voters head back to the polls for both a presidential and Senate election. Democrat Sen. Sherrod Brown is up for re-election next year, but faces a tough bid for a fourth term in a state that has increasingly veered to the right in statewide elections. In 2022, Republicans JD Vance and Mike DeWine won their Senate and gubernatorial races, respectively.

Brown highlighted the difference between his and his opponent’s stances on abortion when asked about his takeaways from Ohio’s Tuesday election.

The election “tells me that Ohioans understand that women and doctors should make that decision, not politicians in Columbus,” Brown said. “All three of my opponents are for a national abortion ban, and they are out of step with the reality in my state.”
